Adjective merupakan salah satu part of spech dan memiliki fungsi untuk menerangkan noun (kata benda). Dalam adjective juga terdapat adjective phrase yaitu kelompok kata yang memiliki sifat dan terdiri atas adjective sebagai head dan determiner, modifier dan qualifier atau intensifier. Dalam penggunaan adjective ada sebuah kalimat juga sering disertai dengan kata lainnya, seperti penentu, pengubah dan sebagainya. Letak phrase ini bisa sebelum noun (kata benda) atau posisinya sebagai atributif dan bisa juga sebagai penghubung kata kerja atau posisinya sebagai predikatif. Pada penggunaannya edjective phrase ini terdiri atas kata sifat kemudian bisa didahului atau juga diikuti oleh kata lainnya.

Adjective phrase terbentuk dari intensifer dan juga kata sifat (adjective) atau bisa juga sebagai alternatif yaitu dengan lebih dari 1 kata sifat (adjective) secara berturut-turut pada sebuah kalimat. Contohnya yaitu “very beautiful flower”. Fungsi dari adjective phrase tak hanya digunakan dalam frase kata sifat (adjective phrase) namun juga sebagai modifikasi kata ganti. Untuk mengidentifikasi adanya adjective phrase di sebuah kalimat yaitu dengan cara melihat terlebih dahulu kata pertama dari sebuah kelompok kata yang ada. Apabila kelompok kata tersebut memodifikasi noun (kata benda) atau subject dan kalimat maka itu merupakan sebuah adjective phrase. Kemudian jika kata pertama merupakan sebuah preposisi atau keterangan dan itu juga merupakan salah satu bentuk frase kata sifat (adjective phrase).

Jenis Adjective Phrase

Adjective phrase terdiri dari 2 jenis, yaitu predicative dan attributive. Predicative adjective adalah adjective yang berfungsi sebagai predikat seperti namanya. Kemudian attributive adjective yaitu berfungsi untuk mendeskripsikan noun (kata benda).

Adjective phrases with verbs

Dalam penggunaan adjective phrase ini yaitu berfungsi sebagai pelengkap kata kerja atau sebagai complement to a verb. Fungsinya yaitu untuk melengkapi makna verb yang akan dijelaskan termasuk pada linking verb, seperti seem, become, seem, feel, smell, taste. Adjective phrases menjadi sebuah pelengkap ini juga sering disebut sebagai predicate function.

Fungsi adjective phrase juga digunakan sebagai pelengkap objek (object complement).

Determiner

Determiner ini pada umumnya digunakan untuk menerangkan sebuah adjective dalam bentuk article.

Modifier ini berfungsi sebagai adjective atau adverb yang merupakan phrase atau clause. Letak modifier ini yaitu berada setelah adjective (post modifier) atau sebelum adjective(pre modifier).

Intensifier ini berfungsi untuk menekankan, menguatkan atau juga merendahkan adjective.
